A Visitor Center Provides a Gateway to Cortez Public Lands and Cultural History

Visitors to Canyons of the Ancients National Monument have no place where they can access information, connect with local history, or learn about the cultural significance of the area, a problem one longtime community volunteer set out to solve. His solution? Transform the historic Lamb House into a public resource. LOR’s funding will help the Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance hire contractors to install sheetrock, repair plaster walls, and paint the ceiling; purchase and install a HVAC system; design and install 12 interpretive signs; purchase furnishings, including an information desk, brochure racks, and map table; and install broadband, an alarm system, and a computer setup. The new volunteer-staffed visitor center will deepen local access to public lands and allow Cortez residents, students, and visitors to gather, learn, and connect with the monument and its history.
