A Trailer and Science Supplies Expand 4-H Programs for Monte Vista Youth

  • Local Champion: SLV Area Colorado State University Extension
  • Date Funded: August 19, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $9,758

Monte Vista youth interested in 4-H don’t have year-round access to the supplies and equipment necessary to participate in Outdoor Adventure, Meat Quality Assurance, and other popular 4-H programs. After losing access to state-provided resources, and struggling to accommodate over 100 participants, one 4-H specialist with San Luis Valley Area CSU Extension had the idea to create a local bank of 4-H supplies. LOR’s funding helped San Luis Valley Area CSU Extension purchase a trailer and specialized equipment, including wildlife tracking replicas, incubators, soil samples, insect kits, and veterinary tools, to create permanent educational totes for both the Outdoor Adventure and Meat Quality Assurance programs. The new resources will allow the extension office to offer more flexible programming throughout the year, reach additional schools and 4-H clubs, and ensure all Monte Vista youth can participate in hands-on learning experiences that develop their skills.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Optimystics Citizens Action Network.
