How Squid Inspire A Love of Science in Lander Fourth Graders

  • Local Champion: Fremont County School District #1
  • Date Funded: July 25, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $8,452

While Lander schools do a great job of educating students about local flora and wildlife, exposure to learning about oceans and ocean animals is more limited. Moreover, there isn’t much in the way of hands-on science for Lander’s fourth-graders. One teacher wanted to change that, so last year, she borrowed equipment and supplies from around the district to pilot a fourth-grade squid exploration curriculum that culminated in a dissection, an experience typically reserved for high schoolers. The program was a huge success among students and parents, helping some kids find a new love of science. The problem is that borrowing equipment isn’t a sustainable solution, so the teacher reached out to LOR for help with her idea to secure equipment permanently. LOR’s funding will support the purchase of equipment like dissections trays and kits and cleaning supplies that will allow for the squid curriculum to be become a more permanent program.
