Winter Gear Opens Up Outdoor Learning Opportunities in Taos

  • Local Champion: Field Institute of Taos
  • Date Funded: February 23, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $5,500

The Field Institute of Taos (FIT) recently became a SnowSchool site through the Winter Wildlands Alliance and is eager to provide local youth access to its new STEM-based curriculum. These hands-on lessons combine snowshoeing field trips and classroom presentations to introduce students to subjects like hydrology, winter ecology, wildlife, and snowpack.

However, the institute needed support to buy the equipment required to bring the program to life, so a staff member contacted LOR for help. LOR’s funding will enable the FIT to purchase supplies, including instructional materials, snowshoes, trekking poles, jackets, wool socks, and gloves, to ensure all children in Taos can participate in SnowSchool learning opportunities regardless of their at-home resources.
