Water Bottles Promote Hydration (And Its Benefits) Among Students in Taos

  • Local Champion: Friends of the Taos Charter School
  • Date Funded: September 19, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $2,810

Despite the essential role of adequate hydration in maximizing mood, brain function, and overall health, nationwide surveys have found that over half of K-12 students are consistently dehydrated.

A teacher at Taos Charter School noticed that the children who brought water bottles to school with them were more likely to hydrate throughout the day, with fewer interruptions to their learning caused by trips to the water fountain. However, those students would often forget their water bottles at home and others came from low-income households that couldn’t prioritize the purchase of reusable water bottles. So the teacher approached LOR with an idea: buy a water bottle for each student (to kept at school) and facilitate a student-led hydration campaign to encourage and remind students to drink water throughout the day.

LOR’s support will cover the cost of purchasing 275 water bottles—one for each of Taos Charter School’s K-8 students—and the cost of art materials that students will use to create and display posters promoting hydration throughout the school.
