Pueblo Ridge Fence Repairs Protect Taos’ Watershed

  • Local Champion: Northern Rio Grande Resources Conservation & Development Council
  • Date Funded: June 12, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $30,000

With damaged and missing boundary fencing, cattle grazing on Carson National Forest stray into sensitive riparian areas, threatening watershed health in Taos’ Rio Fernando basin. Local ranchers recognized how degraded fencing was harming both their livestock management and the broader ecosystem, so they reached out to LOR with a collaborative solution involving Taos Pueblo, the Forest Service, and conservation partners. LOR’s funding will help the Northern Rio Grande Resources Conservation & Development Council hire crews and purchase the materials to repair three miles of critical boundary fencing along Pueblo Ridge. These repairs will keep livestock out of sensitive stream areas while enabling ranchers to implement sustainable grazing practices that protect soil health and water quality in Taos’ primary watershed.
