Vision Screenings Bring Life Into Focus for Taos Youth

  • Local Champion: Lion's Club of Taos
  • Date Funded: May 14, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $15,000

Studies show that corrective eyeglasses can improve children’s concentration and comprehension in school, leading to better academic performance and long-term success. For over 15 years, the Lions Club of Taos has provided free vision testing to underserved students and helped them access corrective lenses at no cost. However, their screening equipment had become outdated and unreliable, creating barriers to efficiency and limiting the number of children they could serve. Two Lions Club members reached out to LOR with a solution: purchase two vision screening cameras that will streamline testing and allow volunteers to identify and address even more students’ vision needs. LOR’s support funded the purchase of the cameras, which will enable the club to screen more than 2600 students during the upcoming school year and connect them to the appropriate optical vouchers.
