Trainings Support Cortez’s Immigrant Community

  • Local Champion: United Way of Southwest Colorado
  • Date Funded: April 23, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $12,185

Many members of Cortez’s immigrant community have withdrawn from public activities due to fear and uncertainty about their legal rights, affecting both family stability and the local economy. Recognizing the harm from this growing isolation, a community advocate with Team UP Southwest Colorado (which is sponsored by United Way of Southwest Colorado) reached out to LOR with an idea. LOR’s funding will help Team UP and United Way conduct know-your-rights training sessions in both Spanish and English, connecting immigrants with accurate information about documentation requirements and available resources. The trainings and support will strictly follow current laws and regulations and are designed for people who have some form of legal rights (work permits, residency, citizenship, etc.) that they may not fully understand. Led by a Spanish-speaking resident who has been helping community members understand their legal status, the program will partner with businesses to reach families experiencing uncertainty, strengthening community connections and economic stability throughout Cortez.
