Team Equipment Supports Taos Special Olympics Athletes

  • Local Champion: Special Olympics New Mexico, Inc
  • Date Funded: May 28, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $3,395

Special needs youth and adults in Taos have limited access to free recreational and athletic programs that foster inclusion, confidence, and community connection. The Taos Special Olympics team—one of the few consistently active free programs available to these residents—currently lacks the basic equipment needed to safely and consistently participate in competitions, travel, and community events. To address this gap, the team’s coach reached out to LOR with a solution. With support from LOR, the Taos Special Olympics program will purchase coolers for hydration and travel support, a comprehensive first-aid kit for safety, team apparel to strengthen identity and visibility, and a branded banner for community representation. The program currently serves approximately 10 athletes, ages 8 to 64, as well as one coach and five volunteer chaperones. These shared resources will support participation in regional competitions and local events, improving safety, strengthening team cohesion, and increasing visibility and pride among athletes who represent Taos throughout the year. This investment strengthens one of the few free, consistently active recreational programs available to special-needs residents, while reinforcing a broader community commitment to inclusion and participation for all.
