When Pens and Pencils Aren’t Enough: Taos Community Stuffs Backpacks With Supplies for Students in Need

  • Local Champion: St. James Episcopal Church
  • Date Funded: July 28, 2022
  • Grant Amount: $4,000

Back-to-school time can be especially stressful for the many Taos students whose families can’t afford the school supplies the school district requires. Understanding this problem, members of several local community groups that work with low-income families (e.g., Taos Immigrant Allies, Taos Behavior Health, St. James Episcopal Church, and Twirl) came up with a solution: Work directly with the school district to identify families who need a little help with supplies, then purchase and distribute them to the families. LOR’s funding will be used to meet the back-to-school supply needs for more than 300 K-12 students.

Impact

462 students were provided backpacks and supplies. This was up from 300 the previous year. Additionally, a new collaboration was born: SHINE, an interagency collaboration to assist youth in community.
