Recreational Libraries Bring Free Sports Equipment to Three Lander Park

  • Local Champion: City of Lander, Wyoming
  • Date Funded: March 18, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $9,999

In Lander, parks offer abundant open space for activities like tossing balls or playing games, but many families lack access to recreational equipment, which can be expensive or only available in Riverton (a challenge for those without cars). When the Lander Parks and Recreation office manager noticed this, she reached out to LOR with an idea modeled after Little Free Libraries and Little Free Pantries. Working with city employees, she proposed installing “Let’s Play Libraries” at City Park, Dillon Park, and North Park—weatherproof storage units stocked with both consumable items like sidewalk chalk and bubbles plus durable equipment like balls and outdoor games. These libraries will serve children biking independently to parks after school, families who decide to stop by without going home first, and younger kids visiting with caregivers who want activities beyond traditional playground equipment. The project builds on Lander’s demonstrated culture of community trust, inviting residents to share and care for recreational equipment while local service organizations help replenish supplies over time. LOR’s funding will help purchase three storage lockers, weatherproofing, concrete installation, and initial recreational equipment, creating accessible play opportunities that encourage outdoor activity and family engagement.
