Mobile Shower Unit Supports Volunteer Capacity in Taos

  • Local Champion: Habitat for Humanity of Taos
  • Date Funded: March 20, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $12,200

Taos families facing housing challenges rely on volunteer labor to build homes through Habitat for Humanity, but limited access to basic amenities for volunteers has created logistical barriers that can constrain construction capacity. With shower access currently limited to restricted hours at a partner facility (which closes before 3:00 PM and is not open daily), volunteer groups face scheduling constraints during long build days and weekend construction, reducing flexibility and the overall volunteer experience.

To address this infrastructure gap and expand housing production capacity, a team member at Habitat for Humanity of Taos developed a solution: a mobile shower and restroom unit that would provide consistent, on-site amenities for the 400–700 volunteers who contribute to home construction each year.

With LOR’s support, Habitat for Humanity of Taos will purchase materials to build a mobile unit featuring four showers, four toilets, and four sinks. The project will also provide hands-on workforce training for UNM Taos electrical students and Taos High School construction interns, who will assist with installation under the supervision of Habitat’s licensed contractor. The unit will be located at a secure site with existing utilities and can be relocated to active build sites as needed.

This infrastructure investment will remove logistical barriers, strengthen volunteer recruitment and retention, and support Habitat’s ability to increase housing production.
