Mobile Data Terminals Improve Traffic Safety in Libby

  • Local Champion: Lincoln County Sheriff's Office
  • Date Funded: June 13, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $24,758

Lincoln County sheriff deputies conducting traffic stops on Libby’s narrow roads must rely on radio dispatch to check license plates and vehicle registrations, creating lengthy stops that put officers, drivers, and passing motorists at risk. Current traffic stops average 18-25 minutes due to information delays, forcing vehicles—and officers—to remain on dangerous road shoulders much longer than necessary. One deputy was concerned about the safety of these extended stops, so he reached out to LOR with a solution. LOR’s funding will help the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office purchase mobile data terminals for five vehicles, allowing deputies to access database information directly from their cars. The technology is expected to cut traffic stop times in half, reducing road congestion and improving safety for officers and the traveling public.
