Middle School Tech Club Upgrades Computers for Latest Applications

  • Local Champion: Fremont County School District 1
  • Date Funded: May 28, 2021
  • Grant Amount: $2,957

The Lander Middle School Tech Club provides students the opportunity for personal growth and leadership as they apply and integrate STEM concepts through hands-on activities related to technology, innovation, design, and engineering. But when a computer science teacher took over the club in the summer of 2021, he discovered that two of the club’s newest and most exciting applications were essentially unusable, as they required more processing power than the school’s existing computers could provide. The solution was clear: with funding from LOR, the school quickly able to purchase two Windows-compatible computers with powerful i7 processors, ensuring that by the start of the school year, students could run both the flight simulator and the milling machine (in addition to the Club’s many other applications). The solution was timely and simple, ensuring that Lander’s middle school students had the materials they needed to continue learning uninterrupted.

Impact

Twelve students per club meeting—96 students total—benefitted from use of a 3D scanner, CNC milling machine, and Microsoft Flight simulator.
