Libby Preserves Its History by Putting Historic Archives Online

  • Local Champion: Lincoln County Public Libraries Foundation
  • Date Funded: August 8, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $5,000

Libby has a fascinating history, much of which is preserved in photo archives and on ancient microfilms. However, much of that archival material was nearly lost when a broken pipe flooded the basement of the library in 2020. Since then, library staff have wanted to digitize the archives to preserve Libby’s history for future generations, but they have not have the time or capacity to do so. The library director reached out to the LOR Foundation this summer with that goal in mind, and with LOR’s help they will hire a company to scan all the photos and microfilms into an electronic database and provide community access to newspaper and photographic records dating back to the town’s founding.
