Killing Two Trees with One Saw: A Woodshop Beautifies Taos Public Spaces with Invasive Trees

  • Local Champion: Taos Land Trust
  • Date Funded: March 3, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $21,700

Invasive tree species like Siberian elm and Russian olive threaten Taos’ native ecosystems. Yet when removed, these trees are typically used only for firewood or mulch despite their beautiful grain and color. Recognizing an opportunity to address the threat of invasive species while also creating public amenities, one staff member with Taos Land Trust came up with an idea: handcrafted benches. In need of support, he reached out to LOR. LOR’s funding will help Taos Land Trust purchase chainsaws, table saws, and other tools and hardware to establish a woodshop where invasive trees will be transformed into benches to be placed throughout Taos’ parks and public spaces. LOR’s funding will also provide stipends for youth and volunteers to sharpen their woodworking skills, transforming an environmental problem into a community good.
