High Schoolers in Cortez Create Much-Needed After-School Clubs

  • Local Champion: Southwest Open School
  • Date Funded: June 23, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $16,972

High schoolers at Southwest Open School (SWOS), the alternative school in Cortez, will have extremely limited after-school opportunities in the coming school year due a community partner losing state funding for programming. This poses a significant challenge, as students in previous years had access to to skiing, kayaking, cooking, and other clubs. To address the funding gap, the leader of SWOS reached out to LOR to see if the foundation could help, and with LOR’s support SWOS will launch two new clubs: mountain biking and e-sports. LOR’s funding will be used to pay staff a stipend to facilitate the programs and purchase supplies for each club including mountain bike equipment and gaming subscriptions.
