Greenhouse Program Offers Hands-on Agricultural Experience to Monte Vista Students

  • Local Champion: Sargent School District NO. Re-33j
  • Date Funded: September 30, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $29,505

Monte Vista’s Sargent High School has a thriving intracurricular Future Farmers of America Club. Recently, participating students have expressed interest in expanding their agricultural education to include more hands-on experience with growing and producing vegetables, fruits, and flowers. However, the school lacked access to an adequate year-round growing space. So, a student and a Sargent staff member reached out to LOR with a solution: purchase a greenhouse and develop programming that gives students the opportunity to grow, harvest, and distribute different kinds of crops.

LOR’s funding will be used to purchase a 26-foot diameter greenhouse, a solar-powered cooling fan and irrigation system, garden beds, and additional materials needed to launch this new initiative and help bring new knowledge (and fresh produce) to the next generation of agricultural managers, engineers, and scientists.
