Generators Aid Emergency Shelter for Libby Residents

  • Local Champion: Fisher River Valley Fire Service
  • Date Funded: February 25, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $29,844

Libby residents who live south of town have no nearby shelter options if they’re evacuated during wildfires or other natural disasters. This problem became urgent in 2023 when a local fire displaced multiple families in the area and blocked a vital roadway, limiting evacuation to town. Members of the Fisher River Valley Fire Service wanted to address this gap in emergency services, so they came up with the idea to maintain the department’s firehouse and adjoining hall as emergency shelters. LOR’s funding helped the department purchase and install two generators with transfer switches, ensuring the firehouse and hall can function as emergency shelters and maintain emergency operations during future disasters.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Kootenai Country Montana.
