Firewood Processing Keeps Libby Families Warm During Winter

  • Local Champion: Lincoln County Port Authority
  • Date Funded: November 26, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $10,000

The National Forest Foundation and U.S. Forest Service donated 20 semi-truck loads of timber to help Libby families in need of firewood, but the Lincoln County Port Authority lacks the capacity to process the wood. Without timely processing, many Libby families are at risk of losing their only source of heating during winter. Staff with the Port Authority wanted to ensure donated wood reached the families who needed it most, so they reached out to LOR with an idea. LOR’s funding will help the Lincoln County Port Authority hire a contractor to process 200 cords of firewood and store it under cover for distribution to local families. The processed wood will provide months of heat for struggling households while reducing wildfire risk in Kootenai National Forest.
