Firefighters and Students Use Thermal Imaging to Help Lander Homeowners Reduce Heating Costs

  • Local Champion: Lander Volunteer Firemans Association
  • Date Funded: July 17, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $7,560

Many Lander homes are old and prone to heat loss, causing high electricity bills and making it difficult for residents to stay safe and warm in their homes in the winter. Thermal imagers, though, are able to detect where heat loss occurs, giving homeowners insight into how to reduce their heating costs. A unique duo came up with a plan for how to use these imagers in Lander homes: The chief of Lander’s volunteer fire department and a Lander Middle School teacher reached out to LOR for help launching a program that would parter students with firefighters to use the thermal imagers to find heating leaks. The students gain a new skill, the volunteer fire department gains some helpful volunteers, and homeowners benefit from learning how to curtail heating costs. The program just needed a little support to get off the ground. LOR’s funding will help with the cost of two thermal imagers plus materials needed to winterize 10 homes (think sealing strips, spray-in foam, etc.).
