Exhibits Make Local Heritage More Accessible to Cortez Residents

  • Local Champion: Montezuma County Historical Society
  • Date Funded: April 29, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $1,950

Many Cortez residents lack opportunities to engage with their rich local heritage, a problem one staff member with the Montezuma Heritage Museum set out to solve. Her idea? Install three short-term exhibits and launch a series of free public programs open to local students and families. In need of support, she reached out to LOR. LOR’s funding will help the Montezuma Heritage Museum purchase exhibit and program supplies and support participating local artists and speakers with stipends. The exhibits—Quilted Stories, Picturing the West, and Native Scenes, Native Stories—will use art to explore Cortez’s history, encouraging students, families, and visitors to connect with Montezuma County’s cultural heritage in meaningful ways.
