Building Updates Strengthen Efforts to Serve Taos Neighbors in Need

  • Local Champion: El Pueblito UMC
  • Date Funded: June 11, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $30,000

Since 2020, the rising cost of food and cuts to federal food assistance programs have quadrupled the number of food boxes distributed by the Shared Table. Every month, the organization serves more than 800 families out of a historic adobe building with tight corners and narrow doorways that create challenges and inefficiencies for the limited staff and volunteers who facilitate Shared Table’s biweekly distribution days. So, a staff member reached out to LOR with a solution: renovate the primary distribution areas, including the kitchen, to create a more functional space and keep up with the community’s growing food security needs.

LOR’s support will fund all the supplies and labor needed to implement updates—such as installing mobile worktops and a new refrigerator in the kitchen, widening hallways, and laying new flooring to improve food transportation in and out of the building—and will subsidize the cost of an awareness campaign designed to recruit additional volunteers.
