An Educational Garden at Battle Rock Charter School Connects Students to Local Growing

  • Local Champion: Battle Rock Charter School
  • Date Funded: May 25, 2022
  • Grant Amount: $10,322

Many of the students at Cortez’s culturally diverse Battle Rock Charter School are disconnected from the local food-production cycle. To address that problem, educators at Battle Rock came up with an idea to create an experiential curriculum that teaches students—and their families—about local growing and the history of crop production in the Four Corners region. To meet that need, staff reached out to LOR for funding to build an educational garden (including irrigation supplies, a vegetable washing station, and a composting system) as well as a shed to store equipment. With the garden up and running, students will be able connect with the local food system and share that knowledge with the Cortez community.
