AEDs in Lander School Buildings Ensure Everyone’s Safety

  • Local Champion: Fremont County School District #1
  • Date Funded: March 21, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $5,926

In the wake of NFL player Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest on the football field in January 2023 (CPR and automated external defibrillation, or AED, were administered, likely saving his life), a local Lander resident became concerned about the availability of AEDs in Lander’s school buildings. He reached out to Fremont County School District #1 and learned that the school does have some AED machines that they are able to take to sporting events, but that there are also some areas of school buildings that were too far away from existing AEDs to be useful in an emergency: The high school had an AED in the gym, but that was too far to be helpful if it was needed on the second floor of the high school; the admin building also had an AED but it was housed too far away from the administrative part of the building to be useful in an emergency; and Baldwin Creek Elementary didn’t have one at all. The local and the school reached out to LOR for help solving this problem. LOR’s funding helped purchased three portable AED units to ensure the safety of everyone in a school district building.
