Accessible Agricultural Exhibition Creates Belonging for Monte Vista Families

  • Local Champion: SLV Area Colorado State University Extension
  • Date Funded: June 24, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $9,687

In Monte Vista, children with disabilities and special needs have had limited opportunities to participate in inclusive outdoor events where they can safely engage with livestock, nature, and their peers. Recognizing this gap in accessible agricultural programming locally and across Colorado, a Rio Grande County 4-H Program Coordinator developed a solution. With support from LOR, the first annual POP (Power of Possible) Livestock Exhibition—the first event of its kind in Colorado—welcomed up to 30 children to a sensory-friendly environment where they could interact with animals, participate in livestock activities, and explore a sensory garden. Funding provided adaptive equipment and event materials, including sensory fidgets, noise-canceling headphones, chew necklaces, a portable adult changing table, a privacy tent, accessibility improvements for wheelchair users, participant awards, event apparel, food and beverages, signage, and lodging for the event’s special guest and judge. The POP Livestock Exhibition celebrates abilities, builds confidence, and creates a lasting model for inclusive programming that can serve Monte Vista families and the broader San Luis Valley for years to come.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Optimystics Citizens Action Network.
