A Volunteer Timebank Creates a New Economy of Service in Taos

In Taos, the spirit of giving has always been strong, but the community is experiencing a shift as long-time volunteers grow older and step back. To keep up with the rising cost of living, many would-be volunteers are having to focus on paid work, leaving a gap and placing growing pressure on local nonprofits who are already feeling the effects of volunteer shortages. Recognizing the challenge, the team at Taos Initiative for Life Together (TiLT) began to envision a more sustainable way to support community service—one that honors and values each person’s time and contributions. To help get their vision off the ground, they reached out to LOR for support. LOR’s funding will help TiLT hire local ambassadors, a project coordinator, and purchase necessary supplies to launch the Taos TimeBank, a new initiative where community members can earn time-based “credits” for volunteering. The credits will allow volunteers to exchange their time for other services—building a reciprocal network of care and connection in Taos.
