A Libby Campaign Grows Access to Fresh, Healthy Produce

  • Local Champion: Libby Area Chamber of Commerce
  • Date Funded: March 26, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $11,360

More than half of Libby residents are on some form of assistance. For many of those residents, eating healthy can be challenging, especially since those participating in the federal supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP) have been unable to put their benefits toward locally grown produce from the Farmers Market at Libby. Last year, the Farmers Market at Libby, which is operated by the Libby Area Chamber of Commerce, joined Montana’s SNAP and Double SNAP programs. But joining SNAP and Double Snap left the farmers market without the money to publicize the new programs, leaving many participants unaware. To address the problem, staff with the farmers market wanted to launch a SNAP marketing and awareness campaign. LOR’s funding went toward newspaper ads, postcards, flyers, and banners, helping the farmers market reach more Libby residents and tackle local food insecurity.

This project was fiscally sponsored by Kootenai Country Montana.
