A High Tunnel Expands Agricultural Opportunities for New Cortez Farmers

  • Local Champion: Montezuma Land Conservancy
  • Date Funded: April 29, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $7,000

Rising land costs are a significant barrier for Cortez’s beginning farmers and ranchers, a problem staff at the Montezuma Land Conservancy set out to solve. After seeing an opportunity to use Fozzie’s Farm—an arm of the Montezuma Land Conservancy—to lease low-cost space, the staff reached out to LOR with an idea. LOR’s funding will help the nonprofit finish construction of a high tunnel at Fozzie’s Farm, including installation of doors, electrical work, irrigation systems, and soil preparation. The completed structure will serve dual purposes—providing accessible, low-cost growing space for residents looking to launch agricultural businesses while also creating year-round educational opportunities where students can gain hands-on experience with sustainable farming practices, water conservation, and local food systems.
