A Converted Bus Preserves After-School Activities for Cortez Students

  • Local Champion: Evangel Assembly of God
  • Date Funded: June 27, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $17,290

In 2022, Cortez’s school board voted to bar outside groups from visiting the campus of Montezuma-Cortez High School. The move hampered the monthly lunches and activities that community groups like the Montezuma Ministerial Alliance, a coalition of local churches, historically provided to students. Looking for a solution to keep outside activities and after-school programs going, members of the coalition came up with an idea: create a mobile hub for students. LOR’s funding will help Evangel Assembly of God and the Montezuma Ministerial Alliance purchase and retrofit a school bus with a grill, popcorn and snow cone machines, and tables and chairs. The converted bus will be used to host lunches and other student events, while other youth-serving organizations in Cortez will be able to use the bus for their programs at no cost.
