A Community Cleanup Initiative Reduces Fire Risks for Taos Residents

  • Local Champion: Habitat for Humanity of Taos
  • Date Funded: April 11, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $9,750

Illegal dumping and neglected properties with overgrown brush create extreme fire hazards throughout Taos, a growing problem as the region faces increasingly dry conditions. When members of the Taos Housing Strike Force identified this growing threat, Habitat for Humanity of Taos staff stepped forward to champion a collaborative solution and reached out to LOR for support. LOR’s funding will help Habitat for Humanity of Taos purchase supplies, create educational materials, and provide stipends to local youth sports teams and clubs participating in the “Brush with Kindness” initiative. During the initiative, volunteers will help elderly and disabled residents clear hazardous debris from their properties while also placing community dumpsters and offering landfill vouchers to make proper waste disposal accessible to all Taos residents.
