Winter Supplies Keep Taos Pueblo Elders Warm

  • Local Champion: Taos Pueblo Foundation
  • Date Funded: January 23, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $5,000

In recent years, many Taos Pueblo elders with low and fixed incomes have struggled to stay warm during the winter months. Their financial constraints, combined with the limited insulation of their traditional Adobe-style homes (some of which lack electricity or gas), have become an even greater challenge as New Mexico has experienced longer stretches of extreme cold. Two community members reached out to LOR with a solution to this increasingly urgent problem: provide elders with a combination of electric heaters, electric blankets, and firewood to help them stay safe throughout the winter. In addition to purchasing the items above, LOR’s support will help supplement the cost of elevated utility bills for Pueblo elders during the colder months.
