Student-Led Project Creates Shaded Outdoor Spaces at Baldwin Creek Elementary

  • Local Champion: Fremont County School District #1
  • Date Funded: December 15, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $9,998

In Lander, the new community pathway at Baldwin Creek Elementary provides valuable recreation space for students and residents, but the area lacks shade, seating, or gathering places—making it uncomfortably hot during warm months and limiting its use as an outdoor classroom. When a sixth grader who had wondered about planting playground shade trees for years saw the pathway project near completion, she and her mom reached out to LOR with an idea that brought together multiple community organizations. Working with the Lander Community Foundation, Popo Agie Conservation District, school administration, and maintenance staff, this 11-year-old’s small idea evolved into a comprehensive plan to create shaded spaces throughout the property. Three strategically placed trees will provide shade along the pathway and playground while replacing aging trees that need removal, and benches plus picnic tables will create gathering spots for outdoor learning and community use. LOR’s funding will help purchase trees with planting costs, benches, picnic tables, and installation materials, creating comfortable spaces where students can read, think, hang out with friends, or participate in outdoor lessons.
