Student-Led 5K Supports Class Activities and Local Animal Shelter in Monte Vista

  • Local Champion: Monte Vista School District NO. C-8
  • Date Funded: March 13, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $5,078

Monte Vista High School students have limited opportunities to organize community events that build leadership skills while raising funds for student activities. After a group of students developed an idea to bring the school and the broader community together through a fundraising race, a school counselor reached out to LOR for support to bring the event to life.

LOR’s funding will support the purchase of t-shirts, supplies, and race equipment, as well as stipends for EMT services, to launch the Pirates for the Pawz 5K—a student-led race that will raise funds for sophomore class expenses like prom and senior trips, while also donating a portion of proceeds to the Conour Animal Shelter.

This annual event will give students hands-on experience planning and hosting a community race, while establishing a new tradition that connects the school with Monte Vista residents and supports both student activities and animal welfare.
