New Sidewalk Increases Pedestrian Safety in Monte Vista

  • Local Champion: City of Monte Vista
  • Date Funded: September 23, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $12,500

Monte Vista High School maintains an open campus, meaning students can leave school grounds during certain times, including their lunch hour. However, school staff and city employees have expressed increasing concern for the safety of students who walk downtown for lunch because much of that route is along the shoulder of a state highway. And this safety concern extends beyond students to the many residents who live or work on the north side of town, as they also are forced to walk along the side this heavily trafficked road to access the downtown area. So, a city employee reached out to LOR with an idea: pour an ADA-compliant sidewalk along the northernmost part of the route—where pedestrians are at the greatest risk—to provide a safe walking path.

LOR’s funding will cover the cost of hiring a contractor to pour the sidewalk, immediately increasing the safety of students and residents in the area and hopefully contributing to a case for further outside investment in safe pathways in Monte Vista.
