New Curriculum Brings Taos History into Local Classrooms

  • Local Champion: Couse Foundation
  • Date Funded: September 22, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $27,500

As the town of Taos continues to evolve, many local students grow up without learning about the deep cultural roots and complex history that shape their community. Local schools often lack a curriculum that fully reflects the multi-cultural traditions that converge in Taos.

Responding to feedback from student interns eager to learn more about local history, the Executive Director of the Couse-Sharp Foundation reached out to LOR with an idea to bridge this gap: bring Taos’s story directly into classrooms.

With support from LOR, the Foundation will hire a community educator to pilot a local history initiative in partnership with schools and cultural organizations. The program will feature classroom lessons and field trips to historic sites. Working with input from educators, Indigenous advisory councils, and museum partners, the contracted educator will develop K–12 curriculum materials and experiential learning opportunities that will help Taos students and families engage more deeply with their community’s heritage—building cultural pride, strengthening local connections, and celebrating the authentic identity that makes Taos so special.
