More Equipment Solves for Too Many (Teen) Cooks in Cortez’s High School Kitchen

  • Local Champion: Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1
  • Date Funded: October 18, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $9,700

The Montezuma-Cortez High School‘s Family and Consumer Sciences Department has become so popular that it’s outgrown its current facilities and needs a secondary culinary educational space to accommodate interest in the program. Students who complete Catering 2 in this program receive their Safe Serve certification, opening potential job opportunities for them. Teachers at the school reached out to LOR for help solving this challenge: If they could expand the hands-on classroom experience, they’d ensure more Cortez students can participate in the culinary arts program, allowing students to receive real-world experience in the restaurant industry. LOR’s funding will help support the purchase of oven/range units, blenders and other cooking equipment, as well as knives and cutting boards.
