Livestock Lending Program Supports Soil Restoration in Taos

  • Local Champion: Taos Land Trust
  • Date Funded: September 8, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $28,504

Many Taos County residents and farmers face serious soil challenges—like low crop germination, poor water infiltration, and invasive weeds—but lack access to affordable solutions such as equipment rentals or irrigation systems. These issues impact both agricultural productivity and regional water conservation. To address this challenge, Taos Land Trust staff developed an innovative solution and reached out to LOR: start a livestock lending program that uses goats and turkeys to naturally restore soil health through targeted grazing, weed control, and organic fertilization.

With LOR’s support, the Land Trust will purchase animals and equipment to launch the program, prioritizing elders and low-income landowners. Goats will consume invasive weeds and aerate soil with their hooves; turkeys will help control insects. Both will provide natural fertilizer to improve soil structure and water retention.

The program will also include educational workshops and be offered free of charge, with the Land Trust managing animal care, transport, and support.
