Little Free Libraries Give Young Monte Vista Bibliophiles Easier Access to Books

  • Local Champion: Monte Vista locals
  • Date Funded: February 1, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $1,850

While Monte Vista has great public and school libraries with staff who care about childrens’ access to books, some obstacles—e.g., transportation to the library, hours of operation, lack of library cards—prevent kids from accessing the library. A few local residents saw a solution, though: Children who might find it challenging to access the library do have ready access to the parks, where Little Free Libraries could be built. Little Free Libraries are freestanding enclosed cases that contain books children can borrow for free and either return or keep. New books are added to the libraries by the community. LOR’s funding will help support the purchase of the materials to build three weatherproof Little Free Libraries and purchase books to fill them.

This project is fiscally sponsored by the San Luis Valley Development Resources Group.
