Hole in One: Cortez Golfers Save Water With New Green Covers

  • Local Champion: Cortez Men's Golf Association
  • Date Funded: October 21, 2022
  • Grant Amount: $27,990

The winter months wreak havoc on the greens at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez, and come springtime the greens are desiccated—so dry that course officials must expend critical amounts of municipal drinking water to get them back into playing shape. But what if the course could keep the greens in a healthier condition throughout the winter months? With that goal in mind, the Cortez Men’s Golf Association brought forward an idea to purchase special tarps to cover the greens and fringe throughout the coldest months. LOR’s funding helped pay for the tarps, which were ordered and installed in late November. Come spring it’s expected the course will reduce its water usage by nearly two million gallons while also improving the playing surface, extending the season, and attracting more golfers.
