Free Testing Kits Expand Access to Safe Drinking Water in Taos

  • Local Champion: Taos Soil and Water Conservation District
  • Date Funded: May 14, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $4,950

Taos County residents who rely on private wells often lack affordable access to water quality testing, making it difficult to know whether their drinking water is safe. Unlike municipal water systems, which are regularly monitored and regulated, private wells are not subject to routine testing or oversight, leaving homeowners responsible for evaluating water quality themselves. Professional laboratory testing can cost hundreds of dollars, creating a significant barrier—especially for households with older wells that may not have been tested in years. To help address this gap, staff at Taos Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) developed a simple solution and reached out to LOR: provide free at-home well water testing kits that allow residents to screen for common contaminants and better understand the safety of their drinking water. With support from LOR, the SWCD will distribute approximately 165 free testing kits throughout Taos County, including to Town of Taos residents and renters who are currently excluded from existing county-funded testing programs. The kits will enable households to screen for contaminants such as bacteria, nitrates, arsenic, and heavy metals—substances that may be invisible, odorless, and tasteless. The SWCD will pair kit distribution with educational resources to help residents interpret results, understand contamination risks, and identify next steps when concerns are detected. Data and community feedback collected through the project will also help the SWCD better understand local water quality concerns and inform future water safety education and outreach efforts across the county.
