Flashing Crosswalk Improves Safety at Busy Lander Intersection

  • Local Champion: City of Lander, Wyoming
  • Date Funded: March 17, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $22,634

In Lander, the intersection of Second and Amoretti streets sees constant pedestrian traffic between the library and courthouse, but cars rarely slow down or stop for people crossing. Parents walking children to and from Apple Valley School preschool use this crosswalk daily, navigating a busy street where drivers often ignore the speed limit and parked cars obstruct visibility. When the director of Wyoming Pathways observed how dangerous this intersection feels and heard similar concerns from many residents, he reached out to LOR with a solution proven to work: pedestrian-activated flashing crosswalk signs. Federal safety data shows these crosswalks can reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 47% by increasing driver yielding rates from roughly 20% to over 80%. After the city installed a similar system near Gannett Peak Elementary with grant funding and saw it successfully slow traffic, they approved this project as the next priority location identified by community members. LOR’s funding will help purchase materials, installation, and thermoplastic pavement markings, creating safer access to the library, county offices, and schools.
