Decodable Books Help Build Reading Skills in Taos

  • Local Champion: Taos Municipal Charter School
  • Date Funded: December 11, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $4,000

Early literacy plays a pivotal role in shaping children’s school readiness and sets the stage for lifelong learning, but many students in Taos lack access to the tools they need to manage literacy challenges. When a teacher at Taos Charter School learned that more than half of the students in her classroom were struggling with dyslexia, she reached out to LOR for help purchasing decodable books for grades K-8. Decodable books focus on particular phonetic patterns and encourage children to sound words out rather than guessing unknown words based on pictures or other cues. Today, being able to offer these texts as a resource for targeted literacy intervention across grade levels means teachers in Taos can better serve children who are building their reading skills and confidence.
