Cortez’s Flair for Drama Grows With Expanded Community Theater Workshops

  • Local Champion: Sunflower Troop
  • Date Funded: November 9, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $5,700

Cortez has a robust theater culture for students, with more than 80 students participating in two middle school productions and over a 100 taking part in the two high school productions. Community theater and productions also have a large draw in Cortez; however, many individuals do not have the skills or confidence to participate in a performance either on stage or behind the scenes. To help address that, the Sunflower Theater Troop’s has offered free acting classes to more than 100 people. Expanding the workshops further—including adding a theater tech class—will help meet the community’s enthusiasm and build sustainability for community theater in Cortez by developing talent and creating a pool of trained volunteers who can take on roles currently filled by a few key volunteers. So Sunflower reached out to LOR for help. LOR’s funding will help support director-led acting clinics and a new  theater tech class.
