Cortez’s First Master Irrigator Workshop Aids Local Farmers

  • Local Champion: Montezuma County Extension Office
  • Date Funded: December 13, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $26,625

Farming in Southwest Colorado is difficult, even more so with recent droughts that have left water in short supply. One of the most significant challenges farmers face is improving water use. In Cortez, irrigation classes and trainings are infrequent at best. To fill this gap, staff at the Colorado State University Montezuma County Extension office wanted to host the area’s first ever Colorado Master Irrigator workshop, which offers local farmers advanced training on water conservation and efficient irrigation practices. They contacted LOR for support amid a fast-approaching deadline; the workshop needed to be held so farmers could purchase supplies and implement new ideas ahead of spring. LOR’s funding will help staff secure a meeting space, promotional materials, and cover the costs of 10 speakers. Cortez farmers will be able to begin putting their new knowledge into practice when irrigation begins in April.
