Cortez Farmers Market Makes Healthy Food Affordable for SNAP Recipients

  • Local Champion: Cortez Farmers Market
  • Date Funded: May 31, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $2,796

Access to locally grown, healthy food is cost-prohibitive for Cortez seniors and families on the Colorado Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Under the current system, families only receive $10 per week to shop at the Cortez Farmers Market and seniors receive $25 monthly—which doesn’t go far given the price of locally grown food. To address this problem, organizers of the market hoped to increase the benefit, which would benefit low-income residents and seniors, as well as the local farmers growing produce. Funding from the LOR Foundation was used to double the the benefit amount, allowing more people in Cortez to access nutritious food.

This project was fiscally sponsored by Onward! A Legacy Foundation
