Cortez Eighth Graders Embark On a Year of Service

  • Local Champion: Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1
  • Date Funded: August 16, 2022
  • Grant Amount: $9,461

In Cortez, middle school students aren’t regularly exposed to volunteer opportunities in their community, which becomes a problem as they grow up and lack connections to local organizations and are detached from the issues facing their town. With this in mind, a teacher reached out to the LOR Foundation for help creating a “year of service” for eighth graders. The initiative will provide opportunities for students to participate in service projects throughout the school year. And there’s a little incentive to get them involved: Any student who completes four hours of community service will receive a sweatshirt—which the LOR Foundation helped purchase—commemorating their accomplishment.
