A Year’s Supply of Bread Fills a Gap for Cortez Food Assistance Programs

  • Local Champion: First United Methodist Church of Cortez
  • Date Funded: September 24, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $30,000

Cortez’s food pantries and soup kitchens distribute roughly 3,400 meals each month, serving more than 900 local clients. For years, Cortez’s food assistance groups relied on donated bread from a single corporation to help feed those in need, but recent changes brought the vital donation program to a halt. With little time to find discounts, donations, or funding to keep local food pantries and soup kitchens stocked with bread, one staff member with Hope’s Kitchen, an arm of the First United Methodist Church of Cortez, contacted LOR with an idea. LOR’s funding will help Hope’s Kitchen purchase baked goods for all of Cortez’s local food assistance programs for a year, ensuring they can continue to supply bread to those in need while they work together to develop long-term funding plans.
