A Model Room Helps Libby Parents Tackle Youth Substance Use

  • Local Champion: Lincoln County Sheriff's Office
  • Date Funded: February 22, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $5,000

Drug overdose deaths have deeply affected both rural and urban communities. Yet, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rural communities are less equipped to handle substance use, largely due to limited access to treatment services. The growing presence of fentanyl has heightened the risk of overdose in Montana; according to a 2021 Montana Department of Justice report, fentanyl overdose deaths in the state increased 167% from 2016 to 2020. For parents, teachers, and other adults in Libby, youth drug and alcohol use can be frightening, but it can also go unnoticed. One officer with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office wanted to make sure that community members had the knowledge and resources they needed to prevent youth substance use. He approached LOR with the idea to create a mobile model bedroom where parents and other adults could learn the signs and symptoms of youth drug use. LOR’s funding will help the sheriff’s office purchase a bed frame, mattress, dresser, night stand, and other supplies needed to create the replica, as well as an informational video display and other resources for parents. Once in use, the “Hidden in Plain Sight” room will help parents and trusted adults protect one of Libby’s most vulnerable groups.
