A Conservation Garden Helps Environmental Education Take Root in Downtown Cortez

  • Local Champion: Montezuma Land Conservancy
  • Date Funded: October 3, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $9,950

Cortez residents have few spaces to gather and learn about conservation and land stewardship. After moving into a new office with a large backyard, staff with the Montezuma Land Conservancy saw an opportunity to transform the neglected space into a community resource. So, they reached out to LOR with an idea. LOR’s funding will help the Montezuma Land Conservancy install accessible walkways, raised garden beds, shade structures, and seating areas to create a welcoming outdoor classroom and gathering space. The transformed yard will serve as a venue for school field trips and community education events, bringing environmental stewardship to the heart of downtown Cortez.
